on tuesdays lesson we just went over the practical we did before half term on 'the effect of temperature on an enzyme catalysed reaction' and so the write up has to be done for homewoooork :)
on thursday we looked at several graphs (4 to be precise) on measuring enzyme activity. the four graphs were based upon the factors which affect enzyme activity:
- temperature
- enzyme concentration
- substrate concentration
- pH
and finally in fridays lesson, we looked at enzyme inhibition and its effects on rate of reaction
- competitive inhibition - regulates and controls
inhibitor and substrate compete with each other for active site of enzyme - non competitive inhibition - also regulates
inhibitor molecule binds to an 'inhibitor site' on enzyme, resultng in the enzyme changing shape - irreversible inhibition - is NOT regulatory process
the inhibitor binds to -SH group of cysteine, and if this is part of active site, it will inhibit the enzyme - and end product inhibition (which seemed somewhat confusing) - regulates a metabolic pathway
the end product of a metabolic pathway acts as an inhibitor on the first steps of pathway
